The Brown Dog Furniture Company

March 22, 2012 in Furniture Design, Interior Design

While strolling the streets of Melbourne last weekend, a quirky and contemporary furniture design company was stumbled upon. The Brown Dog Furniture Company take inspiration from the chocolate Labrador for their design philosophy; strength, warmth and honesty.

The use of reclaimed timber tabletops and sleek and colourful steel legs for materials, again is one of our favourite combinations that is just so eye popping and bold.

Why not throw a little fun into a room and let Brown Dog Furniture help you?

Each piece of furniture can be custom made if required to suit your individual requirements.

LifeSpaceJourney

March 15, 2012 in Furniture Design, Interior Design

There is so much that we like from what the duo at LifeSpaceJourney have designed; a collaborative design and property development consultancy headed by brothers Glenn and Justin Lamont.

They focus on using local industry experts such as builders, furniture makers, ceramicists and metalwork specialists to manufacture their designs, with all timbers locally sourced and recycled.

Their creations are playful, innovative, clever and friendly. Take for instance the Full Moon chair, available in a range of selected colours they just scream fun. The combination of colourful formed metal and timber creates a fantastic contrast – it’s like contemporary meets traditional.

Not to mention their urban development projects, really……amazing.

Surya Graf

March 14, 2012 in Furniture Design, Interior Design, Product Design

There are many of us who fall victim to disguising the chairs in our bedrooms with large amounts of dumped clothes – do you recall when you last used that chair for its intended purpose? Or is it a case of when you need the chair, the clothes get moved onto your bed, and then when it’s time for sleep, the lifeless lump of clothes move back to that trusty chair?

Queensland based designer Surya Graf has heard you, “Hangman” provides a convenient spot for those favourite pair of jeans, jackets and shirts, allowing your chairs to be free form clothing! Hangman is a free standing clothing rack manufactured from bent stainless steel tubing and is constructed as one continuos line which bends around itself.

Hangman is available for purchase through Surya’s collaborative design consultancy; Snack On, please visit their website for further details.

Tessa Blazey

March 12, 2012 in Fashion & Accessory Design

Fascinated with the natural geometric forms of minerals, jewellery designer Tessa Blazey definitely provides a different take on putting a “rock on your finger”.

Her designs are original, unique and may seem a little rough around the edges but are definitely beautiful.

Pieces in the Geo Chain Series of earrings and necklaces are also outstanding, and no doubt would make a stand out complimenting feature to any outfit. We particularly like the combination of oxidised sterling silver and gold plated finishes as seen in the earrings pictured below.

  • Please tell us about yourself and your company
  • My name is Christel Hadiwibawa and I’m the owner of Christelh. Christelh is a creative studio that specialises in the design and creation of high end furniture products for both commercial and residential use.

  • How old is your design company?
  • The studio has been around for 1.5 years.

  • What does you company specialise in?
  • Christelh currently focuses on furniture/product/lighting

  • Please name the top three things you use in your everyday life.
  • - my phone

    - my diary/journal

    - my brain (when it works)

  • What is your favourite piece from your collection to date? Why?
  • I have a couple of favourite pieces to date but probably Trey Lamp – as it required no machinery use, implemented everyday materials which to me brings out the honesty to a piece and shows evidence of hand work and simplicity.

  • Do you have any words of wisdom for fellow young Australian Designers who are trying to get into the market?
  • Hmmm…. best advice would be to be a learning machine, read and learn all you can about the design industry but don’t get lost in it, network, and be honest to yourself and the work that you do. Longevity.

  • Where can people find your designs?
  • You can find my work online www.christelh.com – the shelving units Kembla and Junior can be seen on display at Style Plantation Sydney Showroom (http://www.styleplantation.com.au/)

  • What does Australian design mean to you?
  • When I think of Australian design, I think of youthful maturity. In a sense that the industry here is still growing and evolving, but at the same time it also has a level of maturity.

  • What is currently playing in your CD player/iPod/iTunes?
  • Greg Laurie and the biography of Steve Jobs.

  • Is there a design event you look forward to every year? If so, what is it and why?
  • Milan Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile) – the worlds largest home design exhibition. I have never been there myself (yet) but from what I’ve heard, read, and viewed, its pretty awesome to experience the celebration of the latest pieces from leading companies/designers from all over the world.

  • What’s next for your design company?
  • The plan is for possible collaborations as well as setting up efficient systems of distributing products.

  • Describe your creative style in three words
  • Playful sophistication (I know that’s two but I haven’t thought of a third word yet)
